Smaller Mandalas

In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be employed for focusing attention of aspirants and adepts; as a spiritual teaching tool; for establishing a sacred space; and as an aid to meditation and trance induction. According to David Fontana, its symbolic nature can help one "to access progressively deeper levels of the unconscious, ultimately assisting the meditator to experience a mystical sense of oneness with the ultimate unity from which the cosmos in all its manifold forms arises." The psychoanalyst Carl Jung saw the mandala as "a representation of the unconscious self," and believed his paintings of mandalas enabled him to identify emotional disorders and work towards wholeness in personality.

In common use, mandala has become a generic term for any plan, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically, a microcosm of the Universe from the human perspective.

Immortal Friendship

This is a unique theme of Tibetan painting where an immortal friendship between four animals is shown. It is unique of Buddhist tradition to demonstrate immortal friendship among characteristically different beings i.e. elephant, monkey, rabbit and bird. This thangka promotes high Buddhist morality of tolerance, friendship and unity to achieve any goal of life.

An elephant supports a monkey, who supports a rabbit and the rabbit supports a bird to take the fruits from the tree. This painting gives a noble example of collective efforts in livelihood.

Although the four animals seem to have opposite character, are shown in deep friendship hence encouraging us to tie in friendship between people of diverse professions, attitudes and nature for the sake of benefiting all.

Vajrapani

Vajrapani or tsagna dorje is a bodhisattva who sometimes appears in wrathful form depicted in this thangka. The meaning of his name is bearer of vajra (diamond scepter). Apparently he was seen holding a vajra by his right hand, which rises up towards the sky. He often appears in a triad with other two major boddhisattavas, Avalokitesvara and Manjusri. When appearing in the triad, he stands for persistent strength, Avalokitesvara stands for compassion and Manjusri stands for wisdom.

In some Buddhist traditions he is also regarded as the god of rain and chief of all the serpent gods (nagas).

Avalokitesvara (4-armed)

This is a single deity painting of Avalokitesvara. It depicts Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the embodiment of compassion. Bodhisattva is often called son of the Buddha and is a transcendental deity who by demonstrating immense compassion towards other beings living in samsara, guides them in the path of Buddhahood. Among the Buddhist bodhisattvas, Avalokitesvara is primary since he took the vow to remain in Samsara (world) until all the fellow beings are liberated from the misery of worldly suffering.
He appears with four arms. The lower two hands is in the posture of salutation (namaskara) and holds a jewel (mani). Similarly the upper left hand holds a blue lotus (padma) and the right holds a rosary of 108 beads. Thus, he is also known as mani padma (jewel and lotus) Lokesvara.
According to the Buddhist theological system of five meditational Buddha, Avalokitesvara was born from the fourth Buddha Amitabha and the consort pandara. He thus holds key position in the Buddhist trinity or three-body system of dharmakaya or enlightened body, sambhogakaya or enjoyment body, and nirmanakaya or mortal body. Avalokitesvara's body is that of Sambhogakaya.
He is chief among the bodhisattvas and in many Buddhist traditions. For example, in Tibet he holds the position of national deity for he is believed to reincarnate in the bodies of every successive Dalai Lama, the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet. In Buddhist sutras he is described as the embodiment of compassion.
His popular chant (mantra): OM MANI PADME HUM!

White Tara

White (sveta) Tara is one of the most popular goddesses in the Buddhist Mahayana tradition. She is believed to have emanated from the tear of bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. In Sanskrit she is often referred to as "Saptalocanatara" meaning the Seven-eyed Tara. She is also the main goddess among the three deities of longevity with Amitayus and Ushnisavijaya. Most often these three deities appear in a triad within a thangka.

White color of her body symbolizes Peace, Calmness and Contemptness which are the foundation for longevity. She holds a blue flower in her left hand as a symbol of peace and the right hand is seen in the charity posture. Both hands and feet have eyes with two normal eyes and third eye on the forehead making seven eyes in total. The eyes in feet and hands symbolizes wakefulness that she is always awake of non harming any other beings and the third eye is the wisdom eye that sees the suffering of beings in the six realms.

Her popular Chant (mantra): OM TARE TURE TUTTARE TURE SVAHAH!
